Chelsea ensured that Tottenham’s battle for Premier League survival would continue until the final day after Enzo Fernandez led them to a 2-1 victory over their fierce London rivals on Tuesday — marking the Blues’ first win in seven matches. The Argentine midfielder scored a stunning long-range opener in the first half before setting up Andrey Santos in the second, boosting Chelsea’s hopes of securing European qualification.
Tottenham began the match brightly and almost took an early lead when Mathys Tel’s powerful header struck the post from close range just 11 minutes into the game. Chelsea quickly responded, hitting the woodwork themselves through an Enzo Fernandez free-kick, while Cole Palmer forced a smart save with a curling effort that was tipped around the post.
The Blues didn’t have to wait long to take the lead. Fernandez unleashed a shot from nearly 30 yards out, and his looping effort flew past Antonin Kinsky, who appeared to misjudge the flight of the ball. Palmer came close to doubling the advantage in first-half stoppage time but dragged his low shot narrowly wide.
Tottenham struggled to mount a real response after the break, and Chelsea extended their lead when Randal Kolo Muani’s misplaced pass in midfield was seized upon. Fernandez calmly cushioned a deep cross into the path of Santos, who slotted home from close range.
Spurs managed to pull one back through a Richarlison tap-in soon after, but they couldn’t find the equaliser that would have confirmed their Premier League safety, as the match ended scrappily in west London.
Here are Chelsea’s player ratings from Stamford Bridge:
Goalkeeper & Defence
Robert Sanchez (6/10): Reliable when called upon, dealing well with Tottenham’s few chances. Could do little to stop their goal.
Josh Acheampong (6/10): Worked hard defensively against Tel and made some crucial recoveries. Also pushed forward when possible and earned a free-kick after a smart bit of play.
Wesley Fofana (6/10): Solid performance with several clearances and interceptions, though he was slightly out of position during Spurs’ goal.
Jorrel Hato (7/10): Another composed display from the young defender. His late challenge on Maddison was key in securing the win.
Marc Cucurella (5/10): Got forward well down the flank and found good crossing spaces but was at fault for Richarlison’s goal after a poor headed clearance.
Midfield
Andrey Santos (7/10): Battled physically throughout, particularly against former Chelsea midfielder Gallagher, and finished well to double the lead.
Moises Caicedo (6/10): Produced a superb through-ball to split the Spurs defence early on and generally linked play effectively.
Cole Palmer (7/10): Displayed his flair and confidence again, with some elegant touches, including one that contributed to Fernandez’s opener. Went close with a curling shot. Clearly enjoys facing Tottenham.
Attack
Pedro Neto (7/10): Looked lively and provided the assist for Fernandez’s goal. Though he faded later, he was also involved in the build-up to the second.
Liam Delap (6/10): Worked tirelessly up front, pressing well but couldn’t end his goal drought. Missed one half-chance and picked up a yellow card for his efforts.
Enzo Fernandez (8/10): A standout performer. Opened the scoring with a powerful strike and then delivered a classy assist for the second. His passing range and composure were excellent throughout.
Substitutes & Manager
Trevoh Chalobah (6/10): Added defensive stability late on and did his job effectively.
Mamadou Sarr (6/10): Contributed calmly after coming on, helping Chelsea hold onto their lead.
Alejandro Garnacho (N/A): Introduced late to help run down the clock, though a sloppy giveaway nearly cost the team.
Shim Mheuka (N/A): Came on late with a similar brief to Garnacho, showing energy in the closing minutes.
Dario Essugo (N/A): Provided fresh legs in midfield to see out the final moments.
Calum McFarlane (7/10): Managed his last home game well. Chelsea were the superior side for much of the match, though their game management could have been sharper. Ultimately, the three points — especially in a derby — are what matter most.
