New Delhi:- Amidst the increasing concern about Ebola virus in the world, the Indian government has come in full alert mode. Although not a single case of Ebola has been reported in the country so far, the Center has increased vigilance after WHO declared it a public health emergency. Union Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava took stock of the preparations by holding a review meeting with the Health Secretaries of all the states and union territories.
During this period, instructions have been given to further tighten monitoring and screening at airports and other international entry points. The central government has already sent SOPs to quarantine, investigation, treatment, referral and lab testing to the states and hospitals and health institutions have been asked to remain on high alert. Along with the Health Ministry, many other departments are also engaged in prevention and monitoring in view of the possible danger.
Referring to India’s successful preparedness during the Ebola outbreak in Africa in 2014, the government expressed confidence that this time also adequate arrangements are in place to deal with the situation. According to health experts, Ebola is a very serious and deadly virus, which spreads through contact with the blood, body fluids and contaminated objects of an infected person. At present, instead of panicking, the government has appealed to the people to remain alert and follow the issued guidelines.
