New Delhi: Every year on 21 May, ‘International Tea Day’ is celebrated all over the world. In many countries of the world including India, tea is not just a beverage, but it has become an important part of people’s everyday life, culture and emotions. While some people start their day with strong ‘bed tea’, some take the help of sipping tea to remove the tiredness of the day. But do you know that not only traditional tea, but many other varieties are also very popular around the world and the way of making each one is very unique.

All these teas are made from the same plant
Interestingly, most of the real teas in the world are prepared from the leaves of a single plant called ‘Camellia sinensis’. Simply the way these leaves are processed varies, giving rise to black tea, green tea, oolong tea, white tea, pu-erh tea and dark tea. On the other hand, ‘herbal teas’ like lavender, chamomile and peppermint are not technically true teas, as they are made from the leaves and flowers of other plants.

Main varieties of tea famous all over the world and their specialties:

Green Tea (Healthy Option): The world’s most popular health drink. Its leaves are given high heat immediately after plucking so that oxidation does not occur and the green color remains intact. In China it is prepared by heating it in a pan and in Japan by steaming it.

Japan’s special ‘Macha Tea’: It is completely different from normal green tea. In this, the leaves are grown in shade and then ground and made into a fine powder, which is mixed in hot water and drunk.

Strong Black Tea: India’s famous masala tea falls in this category. Its leaves are completely oxidized, giving it a strong flavor and deep color. Milk, sugar, ginger, cardamom and cinnamon are added to it.

Oolong Tea: It is partially oxidized, whose taste feels somewhere between green tea and black tea.

White Tea and Pu-erh Tea: White tea is the least processed tea and its flavor is very light. Pu-erh and dark tea, on the other hand, are fermented and stored for a long time to give them a thicker and deeper flavor.

Herbal tea craze for relaxation
Nowadays, the demand for herbal teas like lavender tea, chamomile tea, hibiscus tea and peppermint tea has increased rapidly in the market. These are prepared by soaking various herbs and flowers in hot water. Since they do not contain caffeine, people like to drink them at night for mental peace, stress relief and good sleep.
