The Cotswolds is known as the perfect staycation destination for locals and a 'quintessential British experience' for tourists, but it's also a rural playground for A-list celebrities seeking privacy and luxury. While the famous Chipping Norton is home to Jeremy Clarkson, the Beckhams, and Ellen DeGeneres, it also attracts a community of ex-Londoners to hang out at private members clubs Soho Farmhouse or Estelle Manor and shop at Daylesford Organic.
But some have avoided the crowd and chosen a quiet town for the unmatched natural beauty. Situated just east of Bibury and 15 miles east of Cirencester, Little Faringdon in west Oxfordshire is home to supermodel Kate Moss. She bought a ten-bedroom Grade II-listed mansion more than 10 years ago, but only made the move full-time during the pandemic.
Her neighbour includes DJ Calvin Harris, who reportedly spent £3.6m on a country house on the Gloucestershire border in 2019. Handbag designer Lulu Guinness and actress Daisy May Cooper are also locals.
The population of the tiny parish is roughly 60 residents, according to a census back in 2001. Kate told the Sunday Times that she goes wild swimming 'in a secret place, in the middle of lots of fields and only the villagers are allowed to use'. The model said she grew potatoes, garlic, onions, tomatoes and salad leaves in her vegetable patch, and cooked Sunday lunch for daughter Lila.
According to buying agent Adam Lock, of Stacks Property Search, the attraction of the South Cotswolds is its laid back vibe compared to the more show-offy north.
"South Cotswolds is less flamboyant, a little less showy, and feels more like a genuine rural community," he said. "There are plenty of excellent pubs, eateries, villages, and market towns, but it doesn't have the sheer abundance of clubs and high-profile social spots that the North Cotswolds is known for."
Real estate agent Craig Fuller, founder of Craig Fuller Property, explained the difference between north and south Cotswolds. He said: "The North Cotswolds predominantly attract second home buyers working in finance. Many Americans also gravitate to the north because that is what they have seen on social media.
"By contrast, the South Cotswolds tends to attract more creatives - actors, writers, musicians - who want to live full time rather than use a house primarily at weekends."
