Madhya Pradesh :- Bhopal AIIMS, one of the largest medical institutions, itself seems to be ill these days. Amidst claims of super specialty and tertiary care, the institute is facing an acute shortage of doctors. The situation is that 9 out of 30 important departments of AIIMS are running with the help of only one doctor each, due to which not only the quality of treatment is falling but it is also putting the lives of the patients at risk.

In the recent past, the OPD figure of AIIMS has increased from 5 thousand to 7 thousand patients per day. In such a situation, doctors have to see 100 to 200 patients every day. According to experts, on an average a patient is getting only 2 to 3 minutes of time, which is contrary to the standards of super specialty care. Patients complain that doctors are neither able to listen to them completely nor understand the disease in detail.
The condition of cardiology department is bad.
The most serious situation is in the cardiology department. Patients from all over the state come here for treatment of serious heart diseases, but at present only one doctor is posted here. Earlier there were two consultants, but they also left after their tenure ended. Now the doctor alone has the triple responsibility of OPD, IPD (inpatient) and research work.
Difficulties increased due to end of capping
Till about 3 years ago, there was a capping of only 80 patients per day in one department in Bhopal AIIMS. Former director Dr. Ajay Singh had abolished this limit in view of the crowd of patients. According to the current system, it is mandatory for the doctor to see all the patients as per the prescriptions made till 1 pm. Due to this, the mental and physical pressure of work on doctors is at its peak.
Why are the posts lying vacant?
There are posts for reserved category in many super specialty departments, but eligible candidates are not able to find them. The posts of unreserved categories have been filled. The management has sent a proposal to the Central Government to ‘convert’ the seats, but the green signal has not been received yet. Besides, efforts to hire doctors on contract are also failing. For super specialty doctors, a salary of just Rs 1.5 lakh and a contract of only 3 years is not attracting anyone. This package is very less compared to private hospitals.
