How MLS Discovery Rights Complicate Casemiro’s Potential Move to Inter Miami

LA Galaxy currently hold the “discovery rights” for Casemiro, which grants them the initial opportunity to negotiate with the Brazilian midfielder under Major League Soccer (MLS) regulations. This remains the case even though Casemiro has expressed a strong desire to join Inter Miami to play alongside Lionel Messi. This situation highlights how MLS’s distinctive roster mechanisms can sometimes supersede player preferences, leading to intricate negotiations between competing clubs.

Each MLS team manages a Discovery List that can include up to five players who are not currently under contract within the league and cannot be acquired through other allocation methods. The system is designed to prevent multiple MLS teams from pursuing the same player simultaneously, helping to control transfer costs and maintain competitive balance across the league.

The Discovery List gives a club priority rights to a player should he decide to move to MLS. Clubs must first add the player to their list and confirm the inclusion with the league office. The team holding the Discovery Rights then gets the first opportunity to negotiate with the player, although these rights can be traded if the initial club cannot finalise an agreement.

Reports indicate that LA Galaxy have engaged in several discussions with Casemiro’s representatives and put forward multiple contract offers, effectively exercising their Discovery Rights. However, Inter Miami appear to have bypassed the traditional process and are reportedly in advanced talks with Casemiro. This would not be the first instance where a club has signed a player already listed under another team’s Discovery Rights.

If Casemiro’s move goes through, Inter Miami will likely have to compensate LA Galaxy, similar to how Los Angeles previously paid Charlotte FC $400,000 for Marco Reus’s rights. That transaction remains the most expensive Discovery Rights deal in MLS history, with Charlotte leveraging their position after making a legitimate offer despite Reus’s preference for LA Galaxy.

Inter Miami currently occupy all three of their Designated Player slots with Lionel Messi, Rodrigo De Paul, and Germán Berterame. As a result, Casemiro’s initial contract would be capped at under $2 million until the end of 2026. To put this in perspective, Manchester United’s top earner makes about $20 million annually.

Miami have previously structured deferred deals with players such as De Paul and Jordi Alba, granting them Designated Player status later in their careers at the club. Casemiro is reportedly open to lowering his salary expectations to reunite with Messi in Miami, suggesting that financial flexibility remains possible despite the roster limitations.

Inter Miami view Casemiro as their top target to strengthen their midfield and restore balance following Sergio Busquets’ departure. The absence of a natural holding midfielder has forced Rodrigo De Paul into a more defensive role. Casemiro currently leads Manchester United in tackles (2.7 per game) and ranks second in long passes (2.4 per game) in the Premier League this season.

Meanwhile, LA Galaxy are dealing with the long-term absence of Riqui Puig, who will miss most of the 2026 season due to another ACL injury. Although Casemiro would not be a direct replacement, his experience and leadership could prove vital in helping Galaxy compete for trophies. His profile aligns with Galaxy’s long-standing tradition of signing established European stars.

The Casemiro case underscores the ongoing debate over MLS’s Discovery Rights system. One club executive described the rules as “embarrassing” when dealing with global agents, questioning why negotiations are restricted merely because a team that has never contacted the player has placed him on their Discovery List.

MLS officials are reportedly exploring ways to refine the system and reduce disputes between clubs over discovery claims. How the league manages to attract world-class talent like Casemiro while maintaining competitive integrity through such mechanisms will continue to influence the future structure of MLS recruitment.
