  • Reduced risk of accidents

NHAI Summer Driving Tips 2026 : At present, the heat of summer has increased across the country and the temperature has crossed 40 degrees. In such a situation, traveling on national highways is becoming a big challenge for motorists. Rising heat not only leads to fatigue, but intense sunlight is also likely to increase the number of road accidents. Taking this matter seriously, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has issued an important safety advisory for motorists. Along with the infrastructure facilities on the highways, the authority has now paid special attention to make the journey of the people comfortable and safe.

Importance of strong sunlight and sunglasses

Sunlight shines directly into the eyes while driving during the summer afternoon. Not only this, the light reflects off the asphalt of the road, oncoming vehicles and steel guardrails. This causes the driver to not see the road ahead clearly, which is technically known as ‘Glare’. This puts a lot of strain on the eyes and can lead to drowsiness or lapses in judgment. Hence NHAI advises drivers to use good quality sunglasses while travelling. This not only protects the eyes, but also helps prevent accidents by improving visibility.

Windshield cleaning: A small mistake and a big risk

Many of us neglect the cleanliness of the windshield (front glass) of the car. However, it is the glass that is most important for your safety in the summer. Dust or dried water spots on glass cause light scattering when exposed to sunlight. Due to this, oncoming vehicles cannot be predicted. A clear windshield gives you a clear 360 degree view of the road. So it is very important to clean the glass thoroughly before leaving for the trip.

Effective use of sun visors

Inside the car, the front side sun visors are not just for decoration but are an important safety device. Especially during sunrise and sunset when the sun is on the horizon, its light enters the eyes directly. In this case, lowering the sun visor blocks the direct light. These little tips can save your life while driving fast on the highway.

Extra precautions for long journeys

NHAI has appealed to the public through social media platform ‘X’ to check not only the external safety but also the internal condition of the vehicle. Tire bursts occur frequently in summer, so the air pressure in the tires should be maintained properly. Also, make sure that the car’s air conditioner (AC) is working properly. Carrying enough water with you to avoid dehydration while traveling and taking short breaks every two to three hours is beneficial for health and safe driving.
