War in the Middle East and LPG crisis The effect is being felt in various parts of India. Corporate buildings have begun to be locked down and workers from far-flung locations are being forced to flee. There was a huge rush of passengers at Udhna railway station in Surat on Sunday. Thousands of people rushed to the station to get seats in trains bound for Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. The baton charge led to a stampede-like situation.

On 19 April 2026 at around 11:30 AM, when passengers were queuing for the Udhna-Hasanpur train, some people tried to break the queue. As the situation escalated, police and RPF personnel resorted to lathi charge to bring the mob under control. In videos circulating on social media, commuters are seen jumping over iron bars to escape police lathicharge.

According to railway official Anubhav Saxena, more than 21,000 passengers had been dispatched in six trains by afternoon, but the crowd was so heavy that it became difficult to maintain order. Commuters were repeatedly urged to stand in line, but the chaos forced the police to take drastic measures. Summer vacation is not the only reason for this huge rush at the station, but due to the LPG crisis, the migration of workers has been going on continuously for the last one-two months. Summer vacations and the LPG crisis have doubled the number of passengers, straining the railways’ efforts.

Railway official Anubhav Saxena said, “Summer has started and we have also run special trains for passengers. Six trains have been run so far today. The first train left Udhna for Jayanagar at 1:30 am. Then, the second train left Udhna for Madhubani at 5:30 pm. We are constantly monitoring the number of passengers and the railways has made complete arrangements.”

Responding to a query about the video that went viral on social media and the lathi-charge on passengers, a railway official said, “While the passengers were being brought to the station, some people tried to break the train line. People were urged to maintain order; the train is fully equipped. But some people tried to break the train line and run away, after which the lathi-charge was carried out.” It is our job to maintain order.”

This is not the first time that a crowd is seen at the railway station, but this time the LPG crisis is also contributing to the crowd. Passengers have been migrating since last one-two months and now summer vacation has started. There are two reasons behind this rush. The railways has its own claims, but the photographs that have emerged clearly show that the number of passengers at Udhna railway station is steadily increasing and the police are having to use force.

The gas crisis has a major impact on the textile industry of Surat

Surat’s textile industry has been hit hard due to gas shortage. Nearly 30%, or 300,000 workers, have migrated, reducing production from 65 million meters per day to 45 million meters per day. The industry needs 15,000 gas cylinders, but supply is slow. If the situation does not improve, there is a risk of more workers leaving and increasing losses.
