How to clean phone charging port safely: A smartphone’s charging port is a very important part. From charging to data transfer, the port is used continuously. However, keeping the phone in a pocket or bag gradually accumulates dust, lint and debris inside. This causes the charging cable to not connect evenly and loose connection problem.
But, there is also a proper way to clean the charging port. Improper cleaning can also damage your phone permanently.
Pay special attention to these things while cleaning
Turn off the phone and check: Turn off the phone and remove the charger before starting cleaning. Look inside the port by torchlight. Clean only if dust or debris is visible.
Use a soft brush: If only light dust has accumulated, gently clean the outside of the port with a clean, dry, and very soft brush. Do not push in too much.
Do not do this by mistake (what not to do?)
1. Use of non-metallic objects: Never insert metal objects such as pins, needles, paper clips or knives into the port. This may bend the internal pins or cause a short circuit.
2. Do not spray liquids or sanitizers: Never put water, sanitizer, perfume or any chemical spray into the charging port. Even big companies like Apple and Samsung forbid cleaning with any liquid.
3. Do not charge when moisture is visible: If the phone gets water or the ‘Moisture Detected’ message appears, remove the charger immediately. Allow the phone to air dry with a fan. Charge the charger only after the port is completely dry.
When to go to service center?
If the phone still does not charge after cleaning, the cable keeps dropping out or the charging stops in between, it is more imperative to go to an official service center instead of troubleshooting at home. Often the problem may not be with the port but with the charging IC, battery or cable.
It’s a good idea to check the port every 3 to 6 months, but don’t try to clean it by inserting things into it unnecessarily often.
