From street corners to big malls, people everywhere make instant payments through UPI. But the companies running this thing which is so convenient are now making a big demand from the government and that demand is ‘charge’ of.

Ahead of the Budget 2026 next year, the big companies running UPI services have demanded from the government that they should be allowed to charge some money on every digital transaction, that is, there should be some ‘charge’ on every payment.

What are the concerns of UPI companies?

UPI has been created by National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). Under the current system, on any UPI transaction, small or big No charges to consumers Had to give.

But the problem is:

• Further investment: Companies are arguing that without earning money, how will they be able to invest heavily in their technology and improve their services?

Why is the government hesitating on this?

The government’s aim has always been to take digital payments to every corner of the country. If charges are levied on transactions, it may slow down the uptake of UPI among people. The government wants that the use of UPI should be absolutely free, so that people can shift completely from cash to digital.

However, UPI companies are also claiming that charging will strengthen the entire system and will also help in preventing fraud.

If charged, how much will it cost?

It is not necessary that the government allows direct charging from customers. This issue was raised last year also. Possible models could be:

1. Charges on large amounts: Only transactions of larger amounts (e.g. above ₹5000 or ₹10000) may attract nominal charges (e.g. 0.1% to 0.5%).

At present, the government has not taken any final decision on this. Only the budget session of 2026 will tell whether this ‘free facility’ of UPI will continue in future or we will have to loosen our pockets a little for every payment.
