If you use WhatsApp Desktop on your Windows PC or laptop, pay close attention — a serious security vulnerability has been flagged by India’s top cybersecurity agency CERT-In, and it could put your entire system at risk.
What’s the threat?
CERT-In has issued a “High Severity” alert warning users of a critical flaw affecting WhatsApp Desktop versions older than 2.2450.6. Due to a misconfiguration between MIME types and file extensions, the app may improperly handle certain file attachments — a loophole that hackers could exploit to gain access to your system.
What can go wrong?
-
Data Theft: A single click on a suspicious attachment could give attackers access to your private information.
-
Spoofing Attacks: Hackers may alter your interface to display fake or misleading information.
-
Full System Control: The bug may allow attackers to take complete control of your device, making it unusable or turning it into a surveillance tool.
How to protect yourself?
-
Immediately update WhatsApp Desktop to the latest version.
-
Avoid clicking on unknown files or links, even from known contacts.
-
Keep your antivirus software up-to-date and your firewall enabled.
-
Regularly update all software and operating systems — not just for new features but for essential security fixes.
Why updates matter:
Many users delay or ignore app updates, assuming they’re optional. But every update includes critical security patches that protect against emerging threats. In today’s digital age, staying updated is staying safe.
