Online scams are growing faster than ever, cheatingrs are constantly adopting new tricks to trap people. From fake calls to fishing links, threats are everywhere and now a simple image can also cause major damage. In a recent case in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, a person lost Rs 2 lakh after downloading photos sent from an unknown number on WhatsApp.

How does the new WhatsApp image scam works?

Cyber criminals have discovered a clever way to target people by sending an infected image through WhatsApp and similar messaging apps. They use a technique called Staynography to hide malware inside the image file. Once the afflicted image downloads or opens, the malware is quietly installed on their device.

After this, this bank can steal sensitive data like login, OTP and password – and in some cases even allow scammers to control the device from a distance. Some fraudsters also make phone calls to persuade the victim to open the image.

What happened in Jabalpur case? In the Jabalpur incident, a person received an image from an unknown number on WhatsApp. Assuming that it is harmless, he downloaded it without thinking. Shortly after, he saw unusual activity on his banking app. Before he could do anything, ₹ 2 lakhs were already removed from his account. Experts say that there was probably a hidden malware in the image that stole its financial details.
