Despite the sweltering weekend heat, crowds of customers in Ho Chi Minh City flocked to a local supermarket to enjoy an all-you-can-eat durian buffet, where organizers prepared one ton of durians to meet soaring demand.
Held by Vietnamese leading agricultural products exporter Vina T&T Group, the event was among the few large-scale durian buffets ever organized in Vietnam, Thanh Nien newspaper reported.
Customers paid VND199,000 (US$7.55) for a one-hour session to eat as much Ri6 durian, sourced from the Mekong Delta, as they could.
On average, the event received about 60 visitors per day.
The buffet not only offers a novel dining experience but also helps promote regional specialties while supporting farmers in bringing their produce closer to consumers, customer Hoang Anh Tuan said as quoted by Lao Dong people newspaper.
“I really like durian; I could probably eat about two to three fruits,” Tuan said.
Durian buffets have become popular in recent years in major durian-producing countries such as Thailand and Malaysia.
Some hotels even partner with orchards to offer customers durian buffet tour packages.
