Bollywood’s ‘Bharat Kumar’: Manoj Kumar says farewell to the world

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India]: At the age of 87, Manoj Kumar, the renowned actor and director who made his mark on Indian movie history, died away.

On April 4, 2025, at 4:03 am, the actor, who was well-known as “Bharat Kumar” for his patriotic plays, passed away in Mumbai’s Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital.

After an acute myocardial infarction, cardiogenic shock was the cause of his death. Kumar’s health was also declining since he had been dealing with decompensated liver cirrhosis for a number of months.

He has been receiving medical attention since his hospital admission on February 21, 2025.

Kumar, who was born Harikrishan Goswami on July 24, 1937, in Abbottabad, which is now in Pakistan, is famous today for his transformation from a young, budding actor to a well-known movie star.

Even though he started his career in the late 1950s, he really became one of Bollywood’s greatest performers in the 1960s and 1970s.

He became a national hero for his depiction of patriotic characters in movies like Shaheed, Purab Aur Paschim, and Upkar, and he was dubbed “Bharat Kumar.”

In addition to acting, Kumar directed and produced a number of popular films over his lengthy career, many of which struck a deep chord with the feeling of pride and nationalism of the Indian audience.

Among his most noteworthy accomplishments is his very successful first feature film, Upkar (1967), for which he received the National Film Award for Second Best Feature Film.

Films like Roti Kapda Aur Makaan (1974) and Purab Aur Paschim (1970), both of which were critical and financial successes, further demonstrated Kumar’s directing abilities.

Kumar has received a number of distinguished honors throughout the years, including as the Padma Shri in 1992, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2015, and other Filmfare awards.

 

His contributions to Indian cinema have had a lasting impression, and both performers and filmmakers are still motivated by his work.

Kumar’s influence extends beyond the movie industry. His movies emphasized the virtues of honesty, patriotism, and national cohesion—themes that still appeal to moviegoers today.

He shaped a period of Indian cinema that crossed boundaries and had a lasting influence on generations of viewers as an actor, director, and lyricist.

With Manoj Kumar’s passing, a chapter in Bollywood history comes to a close. His legacy will serve as an inspiration to viewers and filmmakers for years to come.

After retirement, Kumar also decided to get into politics. He officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party before to the 2004 Indian general elections.
