The matter came into limelight after the shop owners realised that the amount which the customers use to pay using the UPI (Unified Payments Interface) never reached their accounts.

In the advancing digital age, scammers are also getting tech savvy. A new method of online fraud has emerged in Madhya Pradesh’s Khajuraho where scammers allegedly replaced the QR codes placed outside several shops and business establishments overnight to divert the payments into their own accounts.

The matter came into limelight after the shop owners realised that the amount which the customers use to pay using the UPI (Unified Payments Interface) never reached their accounts, according to the several media reports.

Later, a CCTV footage revealed that some miscreants changed the online payment scanners overnight.

As per the police, QR codes at nearly half a dozen shops, including petrol pumps, were swapped with fraudulent ones. In some cases, the group pasted new QR codes over the existing scanners, and the payments reached the accounts of the accused, who are yet to be identified.

One of the victims, Omvati Gupta, an owner of a medical store, averted the fraud when a customer made a payment via QR code at her shop in the morning. The customer pointed out Gupta that the name on the linked account was a different one.

Acting quickly, Gupta replaced the fake QR code and reviewed her CCTV footage, which showed miscreants replacing the code last night. Gupta’s action helped prevent further losses and alerted other shopkeepers in the area.

In another incident, employees at a petrol pump discovered that a new QR code had been pasted over the original one. According to a staff member, customers reported payments not being credited to the bussiness’ account.

Khajuraho police station in-charge Atul Dixit said the cases of cheating were brought to his notice but no trader had filed any complaints, a report by NDTV said. He added that an investigation will be conducted in the matter, expressing confidence that the fraudsters will soon be in police custody.
