The Aadhaar Card has become a very important document. Without it, neither a bank account can be opened nor can one avail of the benefits of government welfare schemes. Aadhaar card contains information such as the person's name, date of birth, and address. Aadhaar is now linked with a ration card and many other documents. The subsidy given by the government also comes to bank accounts linked to Aadhaar. In such a situation, the question arises of what happens to a person's Aadhaar card after his death. Does the Aadhaar number get cancelled? It can be surrendered or UIDI gives the Aadhaar number of the deceased to another person.

All these questions are being raised because in many such cases, after the death of a person, his Aadhaar card has been used for fraud. A bank account was opened with the help of the deceased's Aadhaar or it was used in some other illegal and criminal activity. Therefore, even after the death of a person, his family members need to be alert about his Aadhaar.

Aadhaar is not cancelled

After the death of a person, his Aadhaar card cannot be cancelled or deactivated. It remains active. UIDAI has not made any provision for canceling the Aadhaar number. Nor does UIDAI allot the Aadhaar number of a deceased person to any other person later. There is currently no provision for canceling or surrendering the Aadhaar card, but the biometrics of the Aadhaar can be locked.

How to lock biometrics

To lock biometrics, you have to go to the website- www.uidai.gov.in. Select 'My Aadhaar' here and then click on 'Aadhaar Services'. After this, click on Lock/Unlock Biometrics. Now enter the 12-digit Aadhaar number and the given captcha code here. Along with this, select the Send OTP option. OTP will come on the registered mobile number, enter it. After this, you will get the option to lock/unlock the biometrics data.

Remove name from the scheme

Apart from this, if the person is taking advantage of any scheme or subsidy through Aadhaar before his death, then the family members should inform the concerned department about the death of the person. So that his name can be removed from the scheme.
