Aimed at improving financial access during emergencies, the UPI Lite feature available on apps like Paytm , Google Pay and PhonePay enables users to make transactions without the need for an internet connection.This feature has proven to be very useful in situations like the recent heavy rains caused by Cyclone Fenchal where Internet services were disrupted in parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.The storm caused unprecedented rainfall. Puducherry recorded more than 50 cm of rain in a single day.As a result, many residential areas have been flooded. Amid such challenges, access to essential commodities such as milk, vegetables and groceries became critical.

Highlight of UPI Lite service
UPI Lite allows users to make payments even during internet blackouts by pre-loading funds into the app.Initially, users could top up up to ₹2,000 through this feature and pay a maximum of ₹500 per transaction.However, RBI has now raised the limits. It allows recharge of ₹5,000 and single transactions of up to ₹1,000.Also, Paytm has also introduced an auto top-up feature.Accordingly, it is to be noted that once the user's account runs out of money, the money will be automatically topped up from the bank account.
