Guwahati: Akhil Gogoi, the president of Raijor Dal, has successfully retained his seat in the Sibsaar assembly constituency for a second consecutive term, defeating BJP candidate Kushal Dowari by a margin of 17,272 votes.
Initially, Gogoi was behind in the vote count, but he ultimately garnered 86,521 votes, while Dowari received 69,249 votes, as reported by the Election Commission.
Previously, Gogoi represented this constituency as an independent in the last assembly.
Remarkably, he won the 2021 assembly elections while incarcerated, having been charged with sedition during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) back in December 2019.
