The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has extended UPI access to Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) holding Non-Resident External (NRE) or Non-Resident Ordinary (NRO) accounts, enabling them to make transactions via smartphones linked to international mobile numbers, according to a Mint report.
This move allows NRIs to send money to family members or make payments in India without relying on traditional wire transfers.
Features of the overseas UPI transactions
Fee-free transaction: The service, available to NRIs in countries including the US, Canada, the UK, UAE, Singapore, and Australia, is completely free and can be used while travelling internationally.
Top Indian banks provide UPI services: NRIs can transact with several major banks such as HDFC, ICICI, Axis, Canara, and PNB, using apps like PhonePe, iMobile, and BHIM.
Daily transaction limit: While the daily transaction limit is ₹1 lakh, new users have a temporary ₹5,000 limit for the first 24 hours. UPI can be used for transactions between NRE and NRO accounts or with Indian resident accounts, but not between NRO to NRE accounts. For joint account holders, only the primary account holder can use UPI.
How to set up UPI through international numbers?
To set up UPI, NRIs must link their international mobile number to their NRE/NRO bank account, download a compatible UPI app, verify their number, create a UPI ID, and activate their profile.
