To avoid this fraud, you should know how to identify the right and wrong requests. To protect yourself from fraud, avoid linking your UPI ID directly to your bank account and instead keep money in the UPI wallet. Try to make payments through this only so that your account remains safe. This will keep the money in your bank account safe and your payment work will continue through the wallet. Along with this, check any auto pay request before accepting it. It is important to differentiate between right and wrong.
Also keep these things in mind at the time of payment
Before making any transaction, double-check the name and virtual payment address (VPA) of the receiver.Scammers then create accounts with names similar to those of legitimate companies to cheat you. In such a situation, a little caution can save you from financial loss. Apart from this, do not share your UPI PIN with anyone, not even with the bank or customer service representative. Keep your one-time password i.e. OTP with the same level of confidentiality.
Why are UPI related frauds increasing?
UPI ID is usually an extension of mobile number and UPI provider. Fraudsters take advantage of this. You often share mobile number information at places like eshopping, restaurants, malls, parking lots etc. Due to this, it is easy for fraudsters to crack UPI ID and commit fraud.
UPI fraud is happening like this too
These days many fake UPI apps have come up. There are such apps on Google Play Store too in which the screenshot of successful transaction can be easily created. In such apps, a page of Go to Fake Pay comes up, on clicking which, there is an option to enter the details of the receiver. These people give the details of the name and enter the amount. Not only this, they also enter the date and time in it.
After doing all this, a page with transaction successful appears which looks like the original one and in this way they scam the users. Due to all the information looking absolutely real, people do not even suspect that some kind of scam is happening with them.
