The Aadhaar card is an essential document for various government and non-government activities, as we've highlighted in many of our articles. Recently, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) made a significant announcement regarding changes to the process for updating names and dates of birth on Aadhaar cards. From now on, specific certificates will be required for these changes. Here’s a detailed look at the new requirements set by UIDAI:

Mandatory Documents for Changing Date of Birth:

For Individuals Under 18 Years: A birth certificate is now mandatory to update the date of birth on the Aadhaar card.

For Individuals Over 18 Years: A high school mark sheet with a photograph is required for any date of birth corrections.

Updated Process for Name Changes:

Full Name Change: The process for changing the full name on the Aadhaar card has become stricter. Applicants now need to follow the Gazette process of the Government of India.

Previous Process: Earlier, individuals could change their names using a letter certified by a Pradhan, MLA, or any PCS officer. This method has now been replaced by the more formal Gazette process.

Amendment Opportunities:

Date of Birth: Applicants are allowed only one opportunity to amend their date of birth on the Aadhaar card.

Name Change: Individuals are permitted two opportunities to change their name.

Address Correction:

The central government has provided relief by allowing free updates to Aadhaar cards until June 14. However, correcting the address remains challenging for villagers, particularly when there are errors in the Aadhaar card process.

Alternative Documents for Special Cases:

For Those Without High School Mark Sheets: If a person has not completed high school and cannot provide a mark sheet, a birth certificate is required for date of birth corrections.

If Birth Certificate Is Unavailable: In cases where obtaining a birth certificate is not possible, corrections can be made using alternative documents such as a letter from the Pradhan, an affidavit, inquiries from neighbors, and the Aadhaar cards of the individual’s parents.

These new guidelines emphasize the importance of having the correct documentation when applying for changes to your Aadhaar card. Ensure you have the necessary certificates to avoid any delays or complications in the process.
