ICICI Bank warns customers about fake UPI payment calling scam

Ever since Corona, Indians have become completely dependent on digital payment methods. Initially, large restaurants or stores used UPI to make money transactions, but later, small businesses like vegetable and fruit sellers also started using the digital payment method extensively. Currently there are only a handful of people who do not use UPI or online banking. But the popularity of UPI is now posing a danger to users. In fact ICICI Bank in Halfil shared a post on X platform warning their customers about fake UPI payment fraud. It explains how fraudsters are scamming people by 'mistakenly' sending money through UPI and asking for refunds. At the same time, the bank authorities have also advised how the citizens can protect themselves from such UPI fraud.

Fake UPI payment message scam targeting ICICI Bank customers

A post with video is shared on Halfil X platform by ICICI Bank . Where new and existing customers are specially warned about UPI payment message scamming. In this regard, UPI payments can be made through mobile numbers as well as through banks. That is, if someone has your mobile number and it is linked to a bank, it is possible to send money to that number without your permission. And fraudsters are misusing this facility. Some dishonest people are sending money to unknown numbers first. Then calls the victim saying 'by mistake they made UPI payment on that number'. The money sent later is requested to be refunded. And now the scam starts.

The post said – “UPI users beware. Fraudsters will call and tell you that they have mistakenly made a UPI payment. Then the money received will be returned. Check the amount in this case. Because they can claim to have sent you Rs.20,000 But in reality he sent maybe only 200 rupees."

Many may be wondering how people can fall into the trap so easily? Or how can the difference between 200 taka and 20,000 taka not be noticed? ICICI Bank has also answered this question. It is claimed that - “People are being tricked strategically by changing the position of decimals in 5-digit numbers.” To put it more simply, the scam is done by writing 200,00 while sending 200 taka.

There are many busy people who only glance at how much money they have received through UPI, but do not check it properly. As a result, when such scamming calls come, many people are getting cheated due to sending money in haste. It doesn't even check the payment details to see if any such 'mistaken' payments have actually been made. People are easily fooled due to general ignorance or not taking the matter seriously.

For example, UPI QR fraud is being heard a lot these days. Shopkeepers each hang QR codes on walls or boards for online payments. Some people are taking advantage of it. Fraudsters are superimposing their own QR code over the original UPI QR code placed by the shopkeeper. Due to which the money sent by the buyers is going to the fraudsters bank account instead of the shopkeeper.

So ICICI Bank advises to use UPI payment method very carefully and cautiously. By properly checking the payment after receiving or sending it, no one should fall into such a fraud trap, or lose their hard-earned money.
