The 2024 general election in India has seen a fascinating mix of film stars transitioning from the silver screen to the political arena with many securing parliamentary seats. This year’s election resulted in a coalition led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) headed by the incumbent Prime Minister emerging victorious albeit with a reduced majority. The Indian National Congress-led alliance became the second largest political bloc.
Several Bollywood stars known for their on-screen charisma contested the elections on BJP tickets and emerged victorious. Kangana Ranaut a vocal and outspoken A-lister known for her roles in films like Tejas won her first parliamentary seat from Mandi. Hema Malini affectionately dubbed the Dream Girl of Bollywood secured her third win from the Mathura constituency, showcasing her enduring popularity.
Arun Govil beloved for his portrayal of the Hindu God Rama in the long-running series Ramayana won from the Meerut constituency. Govil had earlier this year starred in Article 370 playing a character reminiscent of Prime Minister Modi. Manoj Tiwari a superstar in Bhojpuri cinema, retained his Northeast Delhi seat for the third time. Ravi Kishan another prominent figure in both Bhojpuri and Hindi cinema, held onto his gorakhpur seat.
The BJP also celebrated a significant win in Kerala with Suresh Gopi a popular figure in Malayalam cinema clinching the Thrissur constituency. In Andhra Pradesh Telugu cinema star Pawan Kalyan representing BJP ally Jana Sena Party won the Pithapuram seat marking another victory for film stars in politics.
The opposition Trinamool Congress (TMC) had the highest concentration of film stars among its ranks. Dev Adhikari a celebrated actor in Bengali cinema, retained his Ghatal constituency seat for the third time fending off a challenge from fellow actor Hiran Chatterjee of the BJP. TMC’s Rachana Banerjee defeated BJP’s Locket Chatterjee in Hooghly adding to the list of actors transitioning into politics.
Other notable TMC winners include Bollywood veteran Shatrughan Sinha who held onto his Asansol seat June Malia who won in Medinipur and Satabdi Roy who secured the Birbhum constituency for the fourth time.
Despite the victories there were significant losses too. Bollywood star and Congress candidate Raj Babbar lost the Gurgaon constituency to BJP’s Rao Inderjit Singh. In Azamgarh BJP’s Dinesh Lal Yadav Nirahua was defeated by the Samajwadi Party’s Dharmendra Yadav. Former actor and cabinet minister Smriti Irani, known for her dramatic win against a Congress leader in Amethi in 2019 lost her seat this time to Congress veteran Kishori Lal Sharma.
The 2024 general election has highlighted the unique blend of cinema and politics in India with several film stars successfully making the transition to public service. Their victories and defeats underscore the dynamic nature of Indian politics where popularity on screen can translate into political capital though not always a guaranteed win. As these stars take on their new roles their journeys from reel to real-life leadership will be closely watched by their fans and constituents alike.
