As per the latest information from the Government of India, UPI as a payments platform, has been launched in seven countries outside India. The most recent launches were made in Sri Lanka and Mauritius for which Prime Minister Narendra Modi was present virtually, along with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. The first time UPI was launched outside India was in Bhutan. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) signed an agreement with the Royal Monetary Authority of Bhutan and launched UPI services in the Himalayan country in 2021. In the European region, France was the first country to accept and launch UPI payments. The first ever UPI service in France was set up at the iconic Eiffel Tower. In the Middle East, UPI has been accepted by the UAE, which is also India's third-largest trade partner. What Is UPI? UPI is a mobile-first payment system developed by the National Payments Cooperation of India. With UPI payments, digital payments and transfers have been made easier by just scanning a QR Code or making a payment to a user through their phone number. With UPI, the payment is directly transferred into the linked bank account. In India, UPI can be used on the BHIM App and other third-party apps such as Google Pay, Amazon Pay, Paytm, PhonePe, BharatPe and many more.
