Neil Tyagi, an interior designer living in New Delhi, is a traveler who is “always on a shoestring budget.” He is in his late 30s and enjoys packing a cabin bag-compatible, minimal outfit. When he went to Montpellier, France, in February of this year, he had not bargained for Paris and had considered utilizing the Charles de Gaulle Airport as his lone point of entry into France. Montpellier afforded him the chance to travel for business. He had almost a whole day to spend in Paris, however, since he was returning from the south of France.

Having gone to the second level of the Eiffel Tower before, he made the decision to reach the peak level this time. He was paying €29.40 (around Rs. 2,645) for the ticket. Fortunately, he discovered that he could now use the Unified Payment Interface (UPI) at the Eiffel Tower to acquire the level ticket payment, much as when he paid a street seller at Connaught Place in Delhi, even though his credit card was about to run out. He went straight to the Eiffel Tower website and used UPI to complete the payment.
Even if the Indian passport is not as strong as that of many industrialized nations, Tyagi notes, “the UPI option made my day, and I felt proud to be an Indian staying ahead of the curve.”
While international tourists are flocking to India because of the UPI revolution, empowered Indian travelers can now purchase goods overseas with ease, including tickets to the famous Eiffel Tower. The effort was made possible by the announcement made by NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) and Lyra, the French leader in proximity payments and e-commerce security, that the UPI payment mechanism will be accepted in France, beginning at the Eiffel Tower.
At a Republic Day celebration hosted by the Indian Embassy in Paris, the formal announcement was made. Given that Indian tourists make up the second-largest group of foreign visitors to the Eiffel Tower, this statement is very important. With this advancement, Indian travelers may now safely conduct online purchases by only scanning the QR code produced on the business website with their UPI-enabled applications to start payment. According to NIPL, other retailers and travel agencies in France will soon be able to use the service. Traveling Indians will find it much simpler to remotely reserve accommodations, museum passes, and other activities during their time in France, thanks to this.
“At NIPL, our ambition is to enable the acceptance of NPCI payment solutions in international markets and create a truly interoperable global payment system,” said NIPL CEO Ritesh Shukla.
“This partnership represents a major advancement and the promise of new business opportunities to come for the players in the French and European tourism ecosystem,” says Christophe Mariette, commercial director of Lyra France, a major player in the payment industry for banks, retailers, and maintenance companies in France.
On February 12, Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth of Mauritius, President Ranil Wickremesinghe of Sri Lanka, and PM Narendra Modi of Sri Lanka launched the RuPay card service in Mauritius and UPI services in both countries.
More than a dozen nations, including Sri Lanka, Mauritius, France, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Taiwan, UAE, Singapore, Bhutan, Hong Kong, Oman, Vietnam, Japan, South Korea, the UK, and others, currently accept payments made using the UPI by Indian tourists. Indians may now make easy, affordable, real-time payments with the use of the UPI and RuPay card systems.
Traveling digital nomad Arnab Nandy says, “Indian tourists can now take advantage of the interbank rate with the help of UPI in foreign countries.” There’s no need to use cards or pay exorbitant fees for foreign exchange. In the meantime, international visitors to India still have faith in the UPI system. CheqUPI, the nation’s first UPI platform for foreign nationals, asserts in a poll that “UPI payments influence 80 percent of foreign tourist experiences in India.”
However, a word of caution. You should be aware of your bank’s foreign exchange and international conversion fees, even if some applications may not charge you extra for utilizing UPI International. The payment service providers and legal requirements determine the precise costs and fees for foreign UPI transactions.
