Herve Renard is reportedly set to be appointed as the new head coach of the Tunisia national football team.

Tunisia is said to be on the verge of hiring Herve Renard, the man who once haunted Lionel Messi’s World Cup dreams in 2022, as their new coach following the dismissal of Sabri Lamouchi.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup has only just begun, yet a major surprise has already unfolded.

The shock came from Tunisia’s decision to sack their head coach, Sabri Lamouchi, in the middle of the tournament.

This drastic move came shortly after Tunisia’s humiliating defeat in their opening Group F match on Monday (15 June 2026).

The Carthage Eagles were thrashed 1-5 by Sweden.

During the match, Sweden took an early two-goal lead through Yasin Ayari in the 7th minute and Alexander Isak in the 30th minute.

Tunisia managed to pull one back just before halftime in the 43rd minute, thanks to a goal from Omar Rekik.

Unfortunately for Tunisia, the second half turned disastrous as Hannibal Mejbri and his teammates conceded three more goals to the Blågult.

The final three goals for Sweden came from Viktor Gyokeres (59’), Mattias Svanberg (84’), and a second strike by Yasin Ayari (90+6’).

According to renowned English journalist Ben Jacobs, the Tunisian Football Federation (FTF) is set to appoint Herve Renard as their new tactician.

The decision is surprising since earlier reports suggested Tunisia was considering reappointing Mondher Kebaier.

Kebaier previously managed the Tunisian national team from August 2019 to January 2022.

If Renard’s appointment becomes official, this would mark the third national team he has led in a World Cup campaign.

The Frenchman previously coached Morocco at the 2018 World Cup and Saudi Arabia at the 2022 edition.

Renard was actually close to participating in the 2026 World Cup with Saudi Arabia but was dismissed less than two months before the tournament began, replaced by Greek coach Giorgos Donis.

One of Renard’s most memorable moments on the global stage came when he guided Saudi Arabia to a stunning 2-1 victory over Argentina in their opening group-stage match at the 2022 World Cup.

The result at the time was seen as a potential blow to Lionel Messi’s dream of lifting the World Cup trophy.

However, Argentina eventually recovered and went on to win the tournament.

Despite their heavy opening loss at the 2026 World Cup, Tunisia still has a chance to advance to the knockout stage, as they have two more group matches remaining.
