Cape Verde’s national team goalkeeper, Vozinha, emerged as his country’s hero after holding Spain to a goalless draw in their opening Group H match at the 2026 World Cup on Monday (15 June 2026) IST.
Cape Verde’s debut at the 2026 World Cup turned out to be memorable as they managed to hold the reigning EURO 2024 champions, Spain, to a stalemate.
Playing at the Atlanta Stadium in their first-ever World Cup appearance, Cape Verde held Spain to a 0-0 draw on Monday (15 June 2026).
La Furia Roja dominated the match with their trademark possession-based play, dictating tempo and flow from the start.
However, their opponents, known as the Blue Sharks, displayed remarkable defensive discipline, successfully repelling wave after wave of Spanish attacks.
After a quiet opening 15 minutes, the first real chance came in the 16th minute when Pedri’s shot was brilliantly tipped away by Vozinha.
That attempt fired up Spain, who began to press harder, forcing Cape Verde to pack their defense deep inside their own half.
The best chance of the first half arrived in the 39th minute when Ferran Torres received a pull-back from Marc Cucurella’s header, only for his effort to crash against the crossbar. The rebound header from Mikel Oyarzabal was once again denied by Vozinha’s quick reflexes.
The 40-year-old keeper put on a performance reminiscent of Superman, pulling off another incredible save to stop Torres’ shot in the 45th minute.
By halftime, Cape Verde, one of the debutants at the 2026 World Cup, had successfully held Spain to a 0-0 scoreline.
In the second half, Spain grew increasingly frustrated as Cape Verde’s rigid defensive formation continued to hold firm.
Not only was the Cape Verde defense unyielding, but Vozinha’s inspired display also prevented the 2010 World Cup champions from finding the net.
By the 70th minute, the veteran goalkeeper—who plays for Portuguese second-division side GD Chaves—had already made five key saves.
Among them was a remarkable goal-line stop from a powerful header in the 56th minute and three successful interceptions of dangerous Spanish crosses.
After the water break, Spain introduced Lamine Yamal and Mikel Merino to inject more attacking energy.
Merino almost broke the deadlock with a low strike in the 73rd minute, but Vozinha comfortably gathered the ball.
In the 82nd minute, the former teammate of Witan Sulaeman at AS Trencin made his seventh save of the evening, denying Cucurella’s close-range header.
Despite limited attacking opportunities, Cape Verde occasionally threatened on the counter, though Spain’s defense remained alert.
As the clock ran down, Spain launched relentless attacks, but fortune was not on their side. Despite unleashing a staggering 27 shots, the match ended in a goalless draw.
The result marked a historic milestone for Cape Verde, who earned their first-ever World Cup point in their debut appearance.
