The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has initiated the third iteration of the Indian Space Hackathon, a national competition aimed at students passionate about space technology and research. This event invites participants from all over India to tackle real-world challenges associated with the nation's expanding space initiatives. Throughout the competition, students will have the chance to receive guidance from ISRO scientists, researchers, and experts in the field during mentorship sessions. Additionally, ISRO has indicated that participants may have the chance to secure internships with the agency.
Challenges and Areas of Focus
The hackathon will present 15 distinct challenges that span various domains, including:
- Artificial Intelligence (AI)
- Climate modeling
- Satellite imagery
- Air quality monitoring
- Agriculture
- Exoplanet detection
- Lunar exploration
- Solar flare forecasting
- Satellite operations
Some specific challenges include utilizing AI and machine learning to mitigate urban heat problems, identifying subsurface ice near the lunar south pole using data from Chandrayaan-2, predicting solar flares with information from Aditya-L1, and creating an AI-based digital twin of India's climate.
Eligibility and Team Structure
Who can participate?
The hackathon is open to undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate students, as well as PhD candidates and researchers. Teams should comprise three to four members and can include students from various colleges or universities.
Participation is completely free, with no registration fees required.

Registration Timeline
The registration for the hackathon commenced on June 10 and will remain open until July 1. ISRO will host 'problem statement explainer sessions' on June 15 and 16. The final team selections will be revealed on July 20, followed by an induction session on July 21. The grand finale of the hackathon is set for August 6 and 7.
