In the era of digital payments, people conduct everything online—from small purchases to financial transactions—but amidst this convenience, cyber fraudsters are devising new methods to scam people. A recent scam involves a stranger asking to transfer money to your PhonePe or other UPI app in exchange for cash. While this may appear to be a simple act of helping someone out, cyber experts warn that it could land you in serious trouble. Furthermore, even without any fault of your own, your bank account could come under scrutiny or even be frozen.
**How the scam unfolds**
In such cases, a stranger claims to be in urgent need of cash. To gain your trust, they transfer the money to your PhonePe or UPI account and then ask you to hand over an equivalent amount in cash. Most people, perceiving this as a routine transaction, agree to provide the cash.
**Where does the real danger lie?**
Cybercriminals often route money obtained through theft or fraud into various accounts. Consequently, the funds transferred to your account could be linked to fraudulent activity. When investigative agencies track the money, your account appears in the records, potentially dragging you into the investigation process unwittingly.
**Risk of account freezing**
If an investigation links a suspicious transaction to your account, the bank may freeze the account as a precautionary measure. This can hinder your ability to withdraw funds or conduct transactions. You may subsequently have to make multiple visits to the bank and relevant authorities to clarify your position.
**How to stay safe**
Avoid exchanging cash for online transfers with strangers. Keep a close watch on your bank and UPI notifications. Immediately report any suspicious transactions to your bank. If you suspect fraud, file a complaint with the cyber helpline at 1930. A little caution can save you from significant trouble.
