Explained: The ‘Mistaken Identity’ Rule First Used in USA vs Paraguay at World Cup 2026

Supporters have long anticipated the introduction of this rule, which finally came into play during the USA’s clash with Paraguay.

In the United States’ opening match of the 2026 World Cup, the co-hosts benefited from a brand-new regulation that made its tournament debut.

Facing Paraguay, the US Men’s National Team (USMNT) dominated early on, netting three goals in the first half amid relentless attacking pressure.

Ten minutes into the second half, luck once again favoured the Americans — not through another goal, but via the implementation of the much-awaited ‘mistaken identity’ rule. But what exactly does it mean?

USA defender Tim Ream appeared to bring down Paraguay’s forward Miguel Almiron with a strong challenge, sending the attacker tumbling onto the pitch.

At first glance, it seemed Ream had collided with Almiron without touching the ball, leading to the USMNT captain being shown a yellow card — until the tournament’s new rule came into effect.

The ‘mistaken identity’ rule permits the overturning of a yellow card through a VAR review, and in this incident, the check revealed that Almiron had actually simulated contact, resulting in him being booked instead.

VAR technology intervened, prompting referee Danny Makkelie to inspect the pitch-side monitor to reassess his initial call.

After a careful review, the Dutch referee concluded that his earlier decision had been influenced by Almiron’s deception, as the player had exaggerated the tackle.

Consequently, the ‘mistaken identity’ regulation empowered Makkelie to reverse his ruling, rescinding Ream’s yellow card and awarding it to Almiron for simulation.

This incident marked the first-ever use of VAR for a mistaken identity situation at a World Cup, referring to cases where a player’s actions mislead the referee into penalising another.

The USMNT’s Group D opener turned into a commanding performance, with Folarin Balogun scoring twice and Paraguay conceding an own goal through Damien Bobadilla.

The opening goal came as Christian Pulisic dazzled down the left flank, beating multiple defenders before forcing the error.

USA restricted Paraguay to zero major scoring chances over the first 70 minutes while creating four of their own before Julio Enciso assisted Mauricio for a goal in the 73rd minute.

Giovanni Reyna sealed the victory with a superb trivela strike deep into stoppage time, in the 97th minute, putting the result beyond doubt.

The Americans will next face Australia on June 19 in their second Group D fixture, as they look to secure progression into the knockout rounds.
