BJP MP’s claim – “50 TMC MLAs and 20 MPs ready to leave the party”

Soumitra Khan has made a big claim in the politics of West Bengal, saying that about 50 MLAs and 20 MPs of Trinamool Congress are angry with the party and are ready to join BJP. After his statement, speculations have intensified in the state politics.

While talking to the media in Bankura, the BJP MP said, “If the central leadership of BJP says once, then TMC will no longer be a party. Everyone is ready to come. About 50 MLAs are unhappy with the party and 20 MPs are ready to join the party.”

Soumitra Khan also made a scathing attack on Abhishek Banerjee. He said, “Today a bulldozer is standing in front of their house. The sinners will have to go to jail.” Khan alleged that houses of BJP workers were demolished in 2021 and now “those committing sins will have to face consequences.”

However, Saugata Roy completely rejected the claims of the BJP MP. He said, “This is a complete lie. Soumitra Khan and the BJP are spreading wrong information. Nothing like this is going to happen.”

Amidst these statements, discussions about growing internal discontent within the All India Trinamool Congress have once again intensified. Following recent electoral setbacks, the party continues to face internal divisions, resignations and allegations of corruption.

The political stir escalated when Barasat MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar appeared along with several Trinamool MLAs at the meeting chaired by opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari. Recently he was removed from the post of Trinamool’s Chief Whip in the Lok Sabha and later given Y-category security by the Central Government, further increasing political speculation.

In the last few days, there have also been reports of resignation of about 100 councilors from various municipal bodies of the state. This has led to instability in many municipalities. According to reports, many boards may fall before the municipal elections next year.

According to sources, Firhad Hakim has also expressed his desire to step down, although this has not been officially confirmed. Whereas Mamata Banerjee had recently appealed to the councilors not to resign.

Political pressure in the state increased further when the BJP-backed administration hinted at investigating the past activities of the municipal bodies. Urban Development and Municipal Affairs Minister Agnimitra Paul said that administrators are being appointed in municipalities where councilor offices are not available.

Meanwhile, several arrests in cases of alleged corruption and extortion have also increased Trinamool’s troubles. Last week, three councilors were arrested on charges of alleged extortion and threats.

The suspicious death of influential Trinamool South Dumdum councilor Sanjay Das on May 23 also increased the uneasiness within the party. Sanjay Das was found hanging, after which the police registered a case of unnatural death. Debraj Chakraborty, considered close to him, is also under investigation by central agencies in the alleged municipal recruitment scam. Whereas former minister Sujit Bose has already been arrested by ED.

The maximum impact has been seen in the municipalities of North 24 Parganas and industrial areas. In Bhatpara municipality, 30 out of 35 councilors resigned, including chairperson Reva Raha. 16 out of 23 councilors in Halishahar Municipality and 14 in Kanchrapara Municipality have resigned. Debjyoti Ghosh, vice-president of Bhatpara Municipality, resigned, saying that employees were not getting salaries and were not getting any guidance from the party leadership.

There are total 42 Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Trinamool Congress won 29 seats, while BJP got 12 and Congress got one seat. In such a situation, the claim of possible defection of 20 MPs has given rise to new discussions in the politics of the state, because such a large number is considered important to avoid the anti-defection law.
