As the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital tools increases in our daily lives, doctors are warning about increasing technology dependence among the population. They say that these tools are helpful in increasing efficiency, but excessive use can restrict the brain’s natural activities and imagination.

Alzheimer’s is a progressive neurological condition and is one of the most common causes of dementia. This problem is mostly seen in people above 60 years of age. Doctors say that dementia is not a natural part of aging, but a serious condition, which requires prevention and timely intervention.

According to the Senior Consultant Neurologist, “A person’s brain remains active and efficient only when facing regular challenges. Playing cards, outdoor sports or learning new skills keeps the brain cells alive. In today’s time, people are more connected to the screen, which reduces the natural power of the brain. Overdependence weakens the memory and imagination.”

According to an interventional neurologist, “In the past, people used to memorize routes, phone numbers, tasks, which kept the brain active. Today, navigation apps, reminders and digital lists reduce mental exercise. The things that used to motivate our brains are now happening on devices.” Doctors say that the early symptoms of Alzheimer’s include memory loss, inability to concentrate, forgetting familiar routes and difficulty in making decisions.

Families have been advised to keep children away from excessive screen time and encourage them to play problem-solving games. Adequate diet of fruits and vegetables, regular physical activity and adequate rest are essential for brain health. Especially adequate amount of Vitamin B12 is important for the brain.

According to doctors, “Mental and physical activity is more important after the age of 40. Learning a new language, pursuing hobbies and playing physical games increases brain efficiency. Staying away from a sedentary life and doing fitness helps mental health.”
