Relying on the 30-year-old for the upcoming season would be a risky decision for INEOS, particularly with backup left-back Tyrell Malacia expected to move on.
The club must identify a long-term replacement, and as previously reported by The Peoples Person, Manchester United’s Director of Football, Jason Wilcox, holds a strong admiration for Newcastle United’s young defender Lewis Hall.
Wilcox’s appreciation for Hall is well known.
Tensions between Eddie Howe and Hall, along with the player’s omission from the recent World Cup squad, have sparked speculation that the 21-year-old could depart St. James’ Park.
However, according to The Manchester Evening News, Newcastle are unlikely to entertain United’s interest in the England international.
The report indicates that the Magpies would demand a substantial transfer fee for Hall. Considering United’s plans to invest heavily in strengthening their midfield, such a large outlay for a left-back appears improbable.
Moreover, Newcastle are reportedly not keen on conducting business with a direct Premier League competitor. Although United have returned to the Champions League and finished nine places above Newcastle in the league table, the Tyneside club remains firm in its stance.
Newcastle’s approach to deter United’s pursuit of Lewis Hall has been made clear.
“Luke Shaw has featured in every Premier League game this season, but with United having played their fewest fixtures in a century, a backup full-back is expected to be brought in ahead of a more demanding schedule next season.
“Newcastle’s Lewis Hall is admired, yet there is recognition within United that the Magpies would set a steep asking price.
“They are hesitant to let go of the young defender to a Premier League rival. Hall’s current contract at St. James’ Park runs until 2029.”
Manchester United are also monitoring Arsenal prospect Myles Lewis-Skelly and Eintracht Frankfurt’s Nathaniel Brown as potential alternatives. It will be interesting to see whether any of these names are pursued further or if Patrick Dorgu is called upon to step into the role.
