England head coach Thomas Tuchel has explained his reasoning behind excluding Chelsea midfielder Cole Palmer from the final 26-player squad for the FIFA World Cup. The German coach maintained his strict stance against selections based purely on reputation, insisting that the versatile attacker had not demonstrated the top-level consistency required for international competition.
Chelsea forward dropped
The standout performer from the 2024 European Championship was one of the most surprising omissions from the squad announcement on Friday, alongside Manchester City’s Phil Foden. Despite his stellar domestic reputation, Palmer’s dip in sharpness and inconsistent club performances proved costly. Tuchel’s selection approach has left many fans worried about the lack of creativity in the attacking third behind captain Harry Kane.
Tuchel explains the reduced influence
Speaking about the decision, Tuchel addressed the scrutiny surrounding his choice and pointed to both performance data and Palmer’s recurring fitness issues as reasons behind his omission.
Tuchel stated: “I think he (Palmer) has been struggling, firstly due to his drop in form at club level—he wasn’t as decisive or as influential as he had been in previous seasons. Secondly, he wasn’t very impactful with us either. His record with us was just not outstanding, not strong enough to guarantee him a spot. That’s the simple truth.”
Reputation overlooked for team balance
The Chelsea star has found it difficult to replicate his domestic success on the international stage, failing to record any goals or assists in his three appearances under the German coach.
Explaining why he chose to omit Palmer instead of forcing him into an unfamiliar tactical role, Tuchel said: “He had to withdraw from camp several times due to injuries, and when he did join, he couldn’t make the kind of impact we were expecting.
“His personality is one of his strengths—he stays calm in big moments and can be decisive—but to produce those moments, you need to be in form and influential within the team. He just hasn’t managed to prove that consistently.
“It was definitely one of the hardest phone calls I’ve had to make and certainly one of the biggest names we’ve left out. But I don’t pick players based on their name, and I won’t play someone out of position just to include them. I prefer to make the tough call early, accept it, and then focus on pushing the rest of the group forward.”
Pressure mounts ahead of the tournament
Tuchel’s revamped squad will now need to quickly develop strong on-field understanding before departing for North America to begin their demanding group-stage campaign. The players are under immense pressure to justify the manager’s selection choices in the upcoming friendlies and the World Cup itself. Meanwhile, Palmer will use the extended summer break to focus on full recovery and return to pre-season training under new Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso at Stamford Bridge.
