Report: West Ham star Taty Castellanos unlikely to feature in Championship next season

There was little for West Ham United to celebrate following their 3-1 defeat to Newcastle United last weekend.

The Hammers now face the looming threat of relegation to the Championship as they head into the final matchday. They must secure a win against Leeds United at the London Stadium and hope Tottenham Hotspur fall to Everton at home to avoid the drop.

Should relegation occur, it would bring an end to West Ham’s 14 consecutive seasons in the Premier League, with their last spell in the second division having come during the 2011/12 campaign.

Relegation would almost certainly force the London club to part ways with several of their top players.

Key performers such as Jarrod Bowen, Mateus Fernandes, and Crysencio Summerville might all pursue opportunities to continue playing top-flight football elsewhere.

January signing Taty Castellanos, who netted a brilliant consolation goal in the loss at St James’ Park, could also be among those departing.

The Argentine striker has managed five Premier League goals in 17 appearances since his transfer from Lazio earlier this year.

According to Italian journalist Marco Mapreso, Castellanos “won’t play” in the Championship.

Reports suggest that the 27-year-old forward would seek a move away from the club just six months after joining if West Ham are relegated to the second tier.

Brazilian giants Flamengo are said to have an interest in Castellanos, though no formal offer has been made yet.

Adding to the concerns for West Ham supporters, Mapreso further indicated that “many big names are ready to bid farewell (at a low cost),” hinting at a potential mass exit of players should the club drop divisions.

The club’s primary aim will be to bounce straight back to the Premier League, but as Leicester City and Southampton have demonstrated this season, an immediate return is far from guaranteed.

In the event that West Ham are relegated, the search for a new striker to replace Castellanos could become one of their top priorities.
