Chinese company BYD has introduced a new plug-in hybrid SUV, Ti7. It accelerates from 0-100 km/h in less than 5 seconds and offers an electric range of 127 km. This signals BYD's expansion beyond just EVs into the hybrid segment.
twoChinese company BYD, which is trying to strengthen its hold in the Nia car market, is now thinking beyond just electric cars (EVs). The company has many great EVs in its portfolio, but now the company has launched a new hybrid SUV, the BYD Ti7. This is a powerful plug-in hybrid SUV. This 5.1 meter long vehicle can accelerate from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in less than 5 seconds. Its electric-only range is also 127 kilometers (WLTP).

Two electric motors and all-wheel drive
The Ti7 measures over 5.1 meters in length, making it quite large. It has a powerful SUV style and plug-in hybrid powertrain. The vehicle has a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine, two electric motors and all-wheel drive system. The company claims that it can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 5 seconds, while even on electric mode only, it can run up to about 127 kilometers (WLTP).
Its biggest feature is powertrain.
The real strength of the Ti7 for India is not its size, but its powertrain. India's EV market is growing rapidly, but premium segment buyers are still concerned about charging infrastructure and long distance travel. A powerful plug-in hybrid can compensate for this gap by offering a good range even in electric mode. Its biggest advantage could be in the 7-seater SUV segment, where Toyota Fortuner currently dominates.
Entry into luxury car segment also
The company will have to do some planning regarding price and positioning. A full-size PHEV SUV imported from BYD will definitely enter the luxury car segment in India. This may limit its sales, but it will be a special premium product for the brand. Most importantly, the Ti7 shows that BYD is no longer just focusing on electric vehicles and if large SUV buyers return to hybrids, this is a new door-opener for them.
Leopard 8 (PHEV) may also arrive soon
The company has also filed a patent for its new SUV, Leopard 8 (PHEV). This patent does not mean that this vehicle will come to the market immediately, but it can be estimated that it may come to India in the future. BYD Leopard 8 is also known as BYD Denza B8 and Fang Cheng Bao Bao 8 in some markets. According to reports, it is a technology-rich, high-performance off-roader with an advanced plug-in hybrid powertrain.
