Former Uttarakhand chief minister and senior BJP leader Major General (Retd) Bhuvan Chandra Khanduri passed away on Tuesday after a prolonged illness. He was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Dehradun, according to ANI.

Khanduri, who had been unwell for a considerable period, was admitted to Max Super Speciality Hospital for treatment. His son, Manish Khanduri, confirmed that the former chief minister died on Tuesday morning while undergoing treatment, as per reports.

A former army officer, Khanduri served as Uttarakhand chief minister twice — from 2007 to 2009 and again from 2011 to 2012. He was also a prominent BJP leader and represented the Garhwal constituency in the 16th Lok Sabha.

Condoling his demise, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami described Khanduri’s passing as an “irreparable loss” for both Uttarakhand and national politics.

In a post on X, Dhami said Khanduri exemplified dedication, discipline and commitment during his service in the Indian Army and continued to uphold those values throughout his political career.

He added that Khanduri played a key role in strengthening Uttarakhand’s development, governance and transparency, and earned respect among people through his simplicity and work ethic.
