Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium is set to host the opening match of the 2026–27 Big Bash League (BBL) season in December 2026, following positive responses from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) to Cricket Australia’s proposal, according to ESPNcricinfo.

Earlier this year, Cricket Australia identified the stadium, home to the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Chennai Super Kings (CSK), as a potential venue. After several months of discussions, both TNCA and BCCI have expressed willingness to support the plan.

Multiple BBL teams have shown interest in participating in the Chennai match. The Sydney Thunder, Melbourne Stars, and Melbourne Renegades are reportedly among those ready to play there.

A five-member delegation from Cricket Australia attended CSK’s final home match of the ongoing IPL season against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Monday to inspect the venue. Cricket Australia is coordinating the event closely with the Australian government. BCCI president Mithun Manhas was also present at the stadium during the game.

Some final government-level discussions remain pending before the match is officially confirmed.

While the BCCI prohibits active Indian men’s players from competing in overseas T20 leagues, former Chennai Super Kings player Ravichandran Ashwin was due to become the first Indian international to appear in the Big Bash League 2025-26 season after signing with Sydney Thunder. However, he withdrew due to a knee injury.

During the IPL 2026 season, Chennai hosted seven matches. In Monday’s match between CSK and SRH, the home team was defeated by five wickets, with SRH becoming the second team to qualify for the IPL 2026 playoffs.
