In a devastating incident at the Islamic Center of San Diego on Monday, five individuals lost their lives, including the two suspects, identified as Cain Clark and Caleb Vazquez. This information was reported by a major news outlet. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, but investigators are looking into potential anti-Islamic materials discovered in the vehicle where the deceased suspects were found.
Authorities confirmed that three of the victims were affiliated with the Islamic Center. The suspects, aged 17 and 19, reportedly died from self-inflicted gunshot wounds. The shooting prompted a significant police presence in the Clairemont neighborhood, with between 50 to 100 officers dispatched to the scene, including the mosque and its adjacent school.
Officers conducted thorough searches of classrooms, prayer areas, and surrounding facilities to ensure there were no additional threats, while also evacuating worshippers and students. According to law enforcement sources, one of the suspects had taken a firearm from their parents' residence and left a suicide note that included references to racial pride. Additionally, hate-related messages were found inscribed on one of the firearms used in the shooting, although the specific content has not been revealed.
The Islamic Center of San Diego, recognized as the largest mosque in the county, also accommodates the Al Rashid Weekend School, which offers Arabic language and Islamic studies. The mosque's imam confirmed that all students, teachers, and staff present during the incident were safely evacuated. Imam Taha Hassane reassured the community in a video message, stating, "We are safe; the entire school is safe. All the kids, all the staff, and the teachers are safe and out of the Islamic Center." The Council on American-Islamic Relations reported that at least one member of the mosque was among the deceased.
San Diego police later confirmed that the threat at the Islamic Center had been neutralized. Mayor Todd Gloria stated that emergency services were actively working to safeguard the community and secure the area. In response to the incident, law enforcement agencies across the United States, including those in New York City and Fairfax County, Virginia, announced they would be increasing patrols around mosques as a precautionary measure.
