Teenagers Can Now Use UPI Without a Bank Account: Parents to Retain Full Spending Control
Indiaemploymentnews | May 18, 2026 11:40 PM CST

Digital payments in India are taking another major step forward, this time targeting teenagers and young users. Paytm has launched a new feature called “Pocket Money,” allowing teenagers to make UPI payments even without having their own bank account.

The feature is designed to give young users limited financial freedom while ensuring parents continue to maintain complete supervision over spending activity. Industry experts believe this could significantly change how teenagers learn digital money management and online payment habits in India.

The service is powered by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) UPI Circle system, which enables controlled digital payment access for secondary users under the supervision of a primary account holder.

Teenagers Can Make UPI Payments Without a Personal Bank Account

Under the new system, teenagers will be able to use the Paytm app for both online and offline payments without opening a separate bank account in their own name.

This means children and teenagers can make small daily purchases independently, including:

  • Snacks and food orders
  • School-related payments
  • Local shopping
  • Digital subscriptions
  • QR code-based merchant payments

Unlike traditional UPI setups, teenagers will not need their own bank-linked savings account to access these services.

Parents Will Continue to Control Spending

While the feature offers digital independence to teenagers, Paytm has designed the system so that parents remain fully in control of usage and spending limits.

According to the company, parents can:

  • Set monthly spending limits
  • Monitor transactions in real time
  • Change usage permissions anytime
  • Block or disable access instantly
  • Review complete payment history

This structure is intended to balance financial freedom with safety and supervision.

Financial experts say such systems can help teenagers gradually understand budgeting and responsible spending habits without exposing them to unrestricted financial risks.

No Need for Repeated OTP Approval

One of the biggest conveniences of the new feature is that parents do not need to approve every payment individually after setup is completed.

Once the Pocket Money feature is activated:

  • Teenagers can make direct UPI payments
  • Parents do not need to transfer money repeatedly
  • OTP approval is not required for every transaction

This simplifies small daily transactions while still keeping the parent account connected to monitoring systems.

Spending Limits Under the New Feature

To maintain safety and responsible usage, Paytm has introduced several transaction restrictions within the system.

The current limits include:

  • Maximum ₹5,000 payment per transaction
  • Monthly UPI spending capped at ₹15,000

These limits are intended to prevent misuse and ensure controlled digital spending by minors.

Additional Safety Features Added

Paytm has also introduced multiple security layers for the feature.

Some of the key safety measures include:

  • Only ₹500 spending allowed during the first 30 minutes after activation
  • Maximum ₹5,000 spending limit during the first 24 hours
  • Mandatory device lock requirement on the phone
  • Real-time transaction monitoring for parents

These safeguards are aimed at reducing risks related to unauthorized access, impulsive spending, and digital fraud.

Parents can also modify spending controls or deactivate the feature completely whenever required.

Why the Feature Could Become Popular

India’s digital payments ecosystem has grown rapidly over the last few years, with UPI becoming one of the most widely used payment systems globally.

However, teenagers and school-going users often faced limitations because most digital payment services required individual bank accounts and age eligibility conditions.

The new Pocket Money feature attempts to bridge that gap by allowing controlled access to digital payments under parental supervision.

Experts believe the feature could become especially popular among:

  • School and college students
  • Urban families
  • Digitally active households
  • Parents seeking cashless pocket money systems
Encouraging Responsible Financial Habits

According to the company, the feature is not just about convenience but also about financial learning.

Teenagers using controlled UPI access may gradually develop:

  • Better money management skills
  • Awareness of digital payments
  • Budgeting habits
  • Responsible spending behaviour

Financial literacy experts say early exposure to monitored digital transactions can help young users understand practical financial discipline before they begin handling independent bank accounts later in life.

How Users Can Activate the Feature

Users can access the feature by updating the Paytm application to the latest version.

After updating the app:

  • Parents can activate the Pocket Money feature
  • Link the teenager’s access under the supervised setup
  • Configure limits and permissions
  • Begin monitored UPI usage
  • The company says the rollout is being gradually expanded and many users may already see the feature inside their Paytm application.

As India continues moving toward a cashless economy, innovations like supervised teen UPI payments could become an important part of the country’s evolving digital finance ecosystem.
