IPL 2026: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Creates IPL History, Leaves Behind Abhishek Sharma in DC vs RR Clash
Cricket Gully | May 18, 2026 1:39 AM CST

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi did somewhat maintain the momentum in IPL 2026 to make it seem effortless, as he did in his team’s match against Delhi Capitals for Rajasthan Royals at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. But it was not just something he did; rather, he broke two records simultaneously within the same match.

The young batsman set an Indian record in becoming the player with the highest number of sixes hit in a single IPL season. With a tally of 43 sixes in IPL 2026, he went past Abhishek Sharma's record by hitting more sixes than the 42 recorded by the latter in IPL 2024.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi broke the record in quick succession as he scored 46 runs off just 21 balls in the process. While scoring these runs, he hit three sixes and five boundaries while taking on the Delhi bowlers straight away from the beginning. His fearless approach once again helped RR secure a strong powerplay as well.

And you can see the consistency when you look at the bigger picture. A bunch of seasoned names like Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, and Shreyas Iyer are also in that broader group, but the RR youngster has now gone past all of them. That’s the part that really stands out.

Vaibhav Joins Special IPL List

Then, during the innings, he slipped into another special IPL list too. He hit his first ball for a six for the third time in IPL 2026. Which is not something many batters can even manage in a single season.

Earlier, Shahrukh Khan had done it for Punjab Kings back in 2023. Sunil Narine pulled off the same kind of thing for Kolkata Knight Riders in 2025. And Devdutt Padikkal also joined the set earlier this season, representing RCB.

Vaibhav basically again proved he plays with attack-first confidence, because he sent the very first delivery he faced straight into the stands. Clean hitting + that calm trust in his timing has made him one of the biggest young stars in IPL 2026 right now.

RR Continue Strong Batting Display Against DC

Even after Vaibhav got out, Rajasthan Royals didn’t slow down. Captain Riyan Parag put up a tough, aggressive innings of 51 runs off 26 balls, and he had five sixes in it. Dhruv Jurel stayed unbeaten on 51 from 37 balls and basically controlled the middle overs, like he had the keys.

Mitchell Starc did bring Delhi Capitals back into the match though, by taking three wickets. And it wasn’t random wickets either—he dismissed Riyan Parag and Donovan Ferreira on consecutive deliveries, which shifted momentum. Madhav Tiwari also chipped in with two wickets.

Still, RR ended up with a solid total because the batters kept the run rate above ten per over. That rhythm mattered.

Rajasthan Royals playing on 187/6 in 18.4 overs. This came after strong efforts from Vaibhav Sooryavanshi (46), Riyan Parag (51) and Dhruv Jurel (51*). Yashasvi Jaiswal made 12, and Dasun Shanaka finished unbeaten on 10. Starc was the leading wicket taker for DC with 3, while Madhav Tiwari grabbed two. Lungi Ngidi rounded it off with one wicket as well.
