Prince Harry is set to be in the UK in 2027 for the Invictus Games, and he has expressed a desire to bring his wife Meghan Markle along with him.
However, prior to that occurring, he has laid out conditions, namely that the Royal Family treat Meghan with courtesy - a stance that has prompted one royal expert to argue he is hardly in a position to be issuing demands.
Pauline Maclaran, co-author of Royal Fever and Professor at Royal Holloway, University of London, said: "I don't think Harry is in any position to make demands from the royals and any such requests are only likely to alienate them further."
Prince William is due to visit the U.S. this summer and has indicated an interest in meeting Harry, though he has requested there be no leaks. Maclaran, however, remains sceptical that this is achievable.
"I really don't see how he could trust Harry not to leak what was said!"
We also spoke to Lynn Carratt, Director at E20 Communications, who believes that setting preconditions will only serve to prolong the rift.
"The challenge for both sides is that every reported 'condition' or 'term' keeps the feud alive in the media, even while conversations about reconciliation suggest progress behind the scenes."
While Harry's wish for Meghan to be treated with respect is entirely understandable, Carratt offered her perspective on what might reasonably be expected from a family renowned for its decorum.
"Basic civility is the bare minimum within any family dynamic, royal or otherwise," she said and went on to add: "However, whether Harry is in a strong position to be making demands publicly is another matter." Harry and Meghan sat down with Oprah Winfrey for a candid interview in 2021, during which they spoke frankly about the Royal Family, levelling a series of pointed accusations.
Subsequently, Harry released a tell-all memoir titled Spare in 2023, once again laying bare private family matters for public consumption.
A significant source of public anger towards the Sussexes stems from the fact that all of this unfolded shortly before Queen Elizabeth's passing, with many claiming it caused her considerable heartache.
While Harry appears to be attempting to mend bridges, certain matters remain deeply difficult to forgive and forget.
Prince William is set to visit the United States this summer for the 2026 World Cup, and speculation is mounting that he may be willing to meet with Harry, with both brothers potentially attending the England vs. Panama match at MetLife Stadium in Rutherford, New Jersey.
Nothing has been confirmed, yet should the reunion take place, it could represent a meaningful step towards reconciliation - for both parties.
