The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced that beginning July 1, students in Class 9 will be required to study three languages.

According to a circular released on Friday, at least two of these languages must be Indian.

“Students may choose a foreign language as their third language only if the other two are Indian languages, or they can opt for it as an additional fourth language,” the circular specified.

This initiative aligns with the CBSE's efforts to implement the National Education Policy 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023.

Furthermore, the board announced that there will be no board examination for the third language in Class 10, aiming to alleviate pressure on students and emphasize learning.

Assessment for this subject will be conducted internally by schools and will be included in the final certificate.

Importantly, the CBSE clarified that the third language requirement will not hinder any student from taking the Class 10 board examinations.

During this transition, schools will temporarily utilize Class 6 textbooks for the third language until new materials are developed.

CBSE confirmed that Class 6 textbooks in 19 scheduled languages, including Assamese, Bengali, and Tamil, will be provided to schools before the July deadline. For other Indian languages, schools may continue to use state-level resources.

Additionally, children with special needs may receive exemptions as per existing guidelines, and foreign students returning to India may be granted relaxations on an individual basis.
