At a time when independent music is increasingly competing with mainstream film soundtracks, singer-songwriter Darshan Raval says the shift has given artistes greater creative freedom and audiences more diverse listening choices. Known for popular Bollywood tracks as well as independent singles such as Tera Zikr, Kamariya and Mahiye Jinna Sohna, Darshan believes music today is no longer confined by language, format or industry labels.

“When I look at music charts now, I see independent songs occupying as much space as Bollywood tracks. Audiences are open to all kinds of music and languages today, and that has changed the landscape,” he says.

While Bollywood playback continues to remain a significant part of his career, he says independent music remains central to his artistic identity. “I usually get approached to sing film songs, and I take up projects that connect with me emotionally. But independent music is equally important because that is where I express myself most honestly,” he says.

The singer, whose recent releases continue to lean towards romantic music, says he is now consciously trying to move beyond creative hesitation and expectations attached to a successful formula.
“I have had major hits in the romantic genre, but each song has been different in its own way. Earlier, there was always pressure about what would work commercially. Now I have come out of that fear and want to enjoy creating music without overthinking it,” he says.

‘Concerts have become more immersive’
Darshan adds that the growth of India’s live music circuit has reshaped his relationship with listeners. Having recently performed in Pune, he says concerts have become a more immersive and emotionally driven experience over the past year. “Fans are travelling from different cities for concerts, and that changes the energy. Live performances have created a stronger connection with audiences,” he says.

With large-scale music tours and ticketed concerts witnessing significant growth across India, Darshan says he is now focusing on expanding his live performance format alongside new music releases. “A lot of new music and concert concepts are in the works. The live scene in India is evolving rapidly, and as a performer, I feel I am still at the beginning of that journey,” he shares.
