Legendary tennis star Steffi Graf has become the new face of supermarket chain Lidl's activewear brand. The German dominated women's tennis in the late 1980s and 1990s, winning 22 Grand Slam titles throughout her career.
Graf was a jack of all trades, having won Slam titles across all three surfaces and all four tournaments. She retired from the women's tour aged 30 in 1999, and post-career has worked with several brands, including Barilla, Apollinaris, Citibank and Danone.
However, her latest collaboration might just be the biggest yet, with Lidl platforming Graffi as the ambassador of their in-house athletics brand, Crivit. The campaign is set to be launched across more than 30 countries, with the slogan 'Find Your Move'.
It's part of an ambitious project for Lidl, who are perhaps best known in the UK for their affordable supermarket goods. Instead, the retailer are keen to break into the athleisure market, with suggestions they want to emerge as a challenger to Decathlon.
A press release read: "Following the success of our Parkside brand, we are now opening up one of the most relevant categories for a better life with Crivit: sports and leisure. The fact that Stefanie Graf has chosen Lidl to spread her mission is a great sign of appreciation and, at the same time, proof of our quality standards."
Despite her previous brand deals, Graf has kept herself to herself post-career and doesn't make that many public appearances. However, husband Andre Agassi - a tennis icon in his own right - paid tribute to his partner's incredible exploits on a court.
Speaking in 2019, he remarked: "She had an athleticism over her peers that was quite a luxury. When she was in full form, she was just a horse that wasn't going to be caught.
"For me, it wasn't like that. I couldn't just steamroll past people because I was such an athlete or talented in all these different ways. I had a couple of strengths, but I had to out-think everybody and implement my strategies one piece at a time, like a puzzle."
Lidl will be hoping that public affection pays off with their new venture!
