Rishabh Pant has faced heavy criticism for his IPL captaincy ever since he moved from Delhi Capitals to Lucknow Super Giants. The team faced poor performance throughout the season which resulted in LSG becoming the first team to lose their IPL 2026 playoff position.
LSG have struggled badly this season, and several decisions made by Pant on the field have drawn criticism from fans and experts alike. The LSG captain committed another critical mistake during the IPL 2026 match against Chennai Super Kings which will now lead to BCCI disciplinary action against him.
A regular T20 match requires approximately one hour and forty minutes to complete an entire innings which includes the time for strategic timeouts. Pant's LSG team needed more time than they should to finish their 20 overs.
The start time for CSK's innings occurred at 7:30 PM IST and the match concluded after 20 overs when the final bell rang at 9:30 PM. The IPL over-rate rules received a clear violation because the match needed two hours to finish its innings.
The team received a slow over-rate penalty because LSG did not finish their overs within the necessary time limits. CSK’s last innings over limited the team to 20 fielders who had to stay inside the 30-yard area.
The IPL rules state that when a team fails to complete its overs on schedule the captain must take responsibility for the situation. The LSG captain faces a fine because slow over-rate violation occurred during the LSG vs CSK match.
Pant received a financial penalty of INR 12 lakh because LSG committed their first over-rate violation of the season which falls under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct that addresses minimum over-rate violations. The IPL governing council will impose a fine of INR 24 lakh if the same error occurs during their remaining games.
Sanjiv Goenka the owner of LSG spent INR 27 crore to acquire Pant before last season began but the investment failed to produce desired outcomes. The left-handed batter scored 269 runs from 14 matches in IPL 2025 while maintaining a strike rate of 133.

The entire LSG team failed to perform well which resulted in their failure to reach the IPL 2025 playoffs.
The Indian wicketkeeper-batter should have performed well this season according to expectations however his performance has not improved. Pant has scored 251 runs in 12 matches during IPL 2026 at a strike rate of 138.
LSG has lost complete control of their season because Pant has failed to perform his duties as captain and batter. The team should have performed better based on their strong squad but they currently occupy the last position in the standings after they became the first team to lose their chance at the IPL 2026 playoffs.
