New Delhi, May 16 – Chief Justice of India Surya Kant voiced concern about the increasing number of lawyers allegedly holding fake law degrees and criticized unemployed young lawyers for engaging in social media and activism rather than practicing law.

Addressing the issue, the CJI stated, “There are already parasites of society who attack the system, and you want to join hands with them? There are youngsters like cockroaches, who don’t get any employment and don’t have a place in a profession. Some of them become media, some of them become social media, some of them become RTI activists, some of them become other activists, and they start attacking everyone… and you people file contempt petitions.”

The apex court suggested that the Central Bureau of Investigation should investigate the matter of fake law degrees. The CJI added that he was awaiting an appropriate case to order a CBI investigation into the law degrees of many Delhi advocates active on social media, stating, “I have serious doubts about the genuineness of their law degrees… the things they are posting on Facebook, YouTube, etc., do they think we are not watching?”

A bench comprising CJI Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi observed there were “thousands of fraudulent people wearing black robes with serious doubts about their degrees.”

These remarks were made during a hearing of a plea concerning the Delhi High Court’s implementation of Supreme Court guidelines on the designation of senior advocates. The Supreme Court declined to entertain the petition and criticized the language used by the petitioner’s advocate, Sanjay Dubey, on social media.

“Let people understand the kind of language you are using on Facebook. I will show you what discipline in the profession means,” the CJI said. Justice Bagchi questioned whether the senior advocate designation was being treated merely as a status symbol rather than as a means to contribute meaningfully to the justice delivery system.

The petitioner later withdrew the plea. The lawyer had previously filed a writ petition challenging the Delhi High Court’s refusal to consider him for senior advocate designation and subsequently filed a contempt plea alleging non-compliance with an earlier Supreme Court direction. However, the apex court dismissed the contempt petition in December last year.
