Both Meghan Markle and Princess Catherine's style was in the news this week for opposing reasons. Meghan hit the headlines for wearing an astonishing £80,000 worth of clothes and jewellery in the latest ad for her lifestyle brand, As Ever. To be fair to her, over half of that figure came from a £47,000 diamond necklace, which she teamed with a white t-shirt just to show how relatable she is.
Catherine, on the other hand, was heaped with praise for recycling items from her wardrobe during her solo trip to Italy. She also donned a sentimental piece of jewellery giving a nod to her family, which costs a mere £10 - a fabric bracelet from a small business in Milan, Atelier Molayem. The ABC Bracelet in Liberty Multicolour Fabric carried the initials of her children, set with Liberty of London fabric. It was subtle and elegant and showed just why Meghan will never be as relatable as the future Queen.
Of course Meghan has worn sentimental jewellery in the past - but the costs generally run into thousands.
Take the Virgo constellation ring she wore in Australia. It is said to be a nod to husband Prince Harry's birth sign. The 14k gold and diamond constellation ring with 0.45 total carat weight retails for around £2,092.
In 2021, she wore necklaces from the same collection in a video with one featuring the Taurus constellation for Archie and another with Gemini constellation for Lilibet, which are around £1,200 each.
Catherine also is not afraid to rewear items in her wardrobe - something Meghan very rarely does, even in her day to day wear. In fact it is so rare it makes headlines when she does. On her recent trip to Australia she showcased a new wardrobe, which she then tried to flog online for commission - something Catherine would never dream of doing.
Contrast that with the Princes of Wales who donned a jacket the Wind Hunter Charmer Pinstriped Blazer from Blazé Milano on her Italy trip. She has previously worn it several times first at a July 2023 airshow. She wore again it in a photograph by Matt Porteous, released when she provided a health update in June 2024, and then again in July 2025 for a hospital and garden visit.
She also pulled a pair of slingback sandals by British shoe and accessory brand Camilla Elphick out of her wardrobe. She first wore the 'Alicia' Slingback Flats in taupe & black at a July 2022 polo match. The stylish footwear features a low heel, which was far more practical for walking Italian streets meeting people.
While Meghan has been known to wear flats, I can't recall any public event where she has not worn heels - even when it was completely impractical. She even wore wedge heel espadrilles to visit Bondi Beach while in Australia and was forced to remove them and walk barefoot on the sand. This didn't make her look cool and relaxed. It made her look unprepared and silly.
Neither Kate nor Meghan were born into royalty and privilege. But only one of them has let it go to their heads - and it is not Kate.
