A doctor has revealed his number one healthiest food, which he says is an extremely beneficial superfood. Explaining his list in a video on his YouTube channel, which boasts 12 million subscribers, Dr Eric Berg DC praised one food for its low-carb, high-fibre and vitamin C contents.
The keto and intermittent fasting expert also stressed how eating a balanced diet and exercising regularly is vital to staying in good shape. In his video titled: "The Healthiest Foods You Need in Your Diet", Dr Berg explained that sauerkraut, which is made from fermented cabbage, is an item that should be a regular part of a healthy diet.
Dr Berg says: "Sauerkraut has the highest vitamin C of any food out there," the expert revealed. "In fact, in one cup of sauerkraut, there's over 700 milligrams of vitamin C and the daily requirements that we need is only roughly around 75 milligrams and one cup of sauerkraut gives us 700 milligrams.

"Vitamin C is very important in collagen, in building bone and in protecting the heart against free radical damage.
"It's a very powerful antioxidant and without vitamin C you get tired, your joints fall apart and you can't build connective tissues. Your skin also becomes more wrinkled and you look older.
"And the thing about sauerkraut, it's a really good pre and probiotic, so it's a great fibre to feed the gut's microbes, and it's fermented, so it has a lot of friendly bacteria - the type of bacteria that can actually enhance your own bacteria.
"If we compare that to yoghurt, which has probiotics, those friendly bacteria get destroyed at the stomach level, whereas the probiotic in sauerkraut survive and get into the large intestine."
The probiotics in sauerkraut can also help protect against foreign microbes that could trigger an immune system reaction. They can help remove toxins from the liver and regenerate new, healthy liver cells too, reports Surrey Live.
Not to mention, the antioxidants in sauerkraut help reduce inflammation as well - and having too much inflammation in the body can potentially lead to chronic diseases, like cancer and dementia.
For maximum benefits from sauerkraut, try to include a small amount in your daily diet. Opt for 'live' sauerkraut to enjoy its probiotic advantages.
If you're pregnant or have a weakened immune system, it's best to avoid unpasteurised varieties.
Additionally, consult your doctor before adding sauerkraut to your meals if you are on MAOIs, have issues with blood pressure, or have any food intolerances or allergies.
