Another round of layoffs in Amazon, new jobs lost due to AI

Desk: The layoff of employees has started once again in Amazon. This time the company terminated the employment of many employees in its Selling Partner Services division. Even before this, in the last few months, Amazon has laid off about 30 thousand employees. The company is continuously moving towards reducing costs and making work more automated. On the other hand, Amazon is investing heavily in Artificial Intelligence i.e. AI. The company’s focus is now on making work faster and cheaper through AI and automation. For this reason, concerns about future jobs have started increasing among employees.

According to the report, Amazon has confirmed new layoffs in its Selling Partner Services division. This team works with third party sellers and handles tasks like onboarding, logistics and account management. The company said only a “small number” of employees have been affected, but the move is part of the company’s ongoing re-structuring. An Amazon spokesperson said in the statement that the company reviews its organization from time to time so that its functioning can be made more effective. The company also said that affected employees will be provided healthcare benefits, severance pay and assistance in finding a new job.

    Under the leadership of CEO Andy Jassy, ​​Amazon has been emphasizing on reducing costs and making operations more efficient for some time. E-commerce grew rapidly during the pandemic, due to which the company recruited a large number of employees. But now the company is continuously adjusting its staff level. In October, January and March also, Amazon has made layoffs in different divisions, which also included the robotics unit. According to the report, the company is now focusing more on those areas where more work can be done with less employees through automation and AI. This change has increased insecurity among the employees about the future.

    Amazon is currently investing heavily in increasing AI infrastructure and data center capacity. The company plans to spend about $200 billion, a major part of which will be spent on AI technology. Amazon is increasingly incorporating AI tools into its retail, logistics, cloud and advertising businesses. Even within the company, employees are being encouraged to use AI systems so that everyday tasks can be automated. Andy Jassy recently said on CNBC’s Mad Money show that AI can completely change both customer experience and business in the future. However, he also admitted that due to automation, the need for some jobs may reduce in the future.
